Building Hope in Worcester: CMHA Breaks Ground on Transformational Resource Center
Earlier this month, the Central Massachusetts Housing Alliance (CMHA) celebrated a major milestone in Worcester’s ongoing effort to address homelessness: the groundbreaking of a new Resource Center at the corner of Gold and Sargent Streets. Among only a handful of similar facilities in Massachusetts, the center will represent far more than a construction project – it is a commitment to dignity, stability and opportunity for individuals experiencing homelessness throughout Central Massachusetts.
The Resource Center will provide a centralized location where individuals experiencing homelessness can access essential daily services, supportive resources, and connections to housing and employment assistance in a safe and welcoming environment. The facility will include showers, laundry services, storage lockers, charging stations, meals, bathrooms, and direct connections to housing assistance, wellness services and employment support. Beyond meeting immediate needs, the center reflects CMHA’s broader mission to create long-term housing stability throughout Worcester County.
Reaching this milestone has been no small feat. From securing real estate, financing, grants and community donations to navigating permitting and building approvals, CMHA overcame numerous challenges to have the opportunity to bring the project to life. The Resource Center will be not only an adaptive reuse of a historic former mill building, but also a testament to the community’s perseverance, creativity and shared commitment to address homelessness with compassion and purpose.
As construction progresses toward its anticipated opening, continued community support remains essential. The Resource Center is only possible because of the collaboration among local leaders, nonprofit organizations, donors, volunteers and advocates who understand that addressing homelessness requires sustained investment and collective action.
Homelessness in Worcester County continues to impact thousands of residents, including children, veterans, seniors and individuals with disabilities. Projects like the Resource Center represent an important investment in both immediate support and long-term solutions.
