The May 7, 2024, Dear Colleague Letter issued to educational institutions by the U.S. Department of Education\u2019s Office for Civil Rights discussed how Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 applies to discrimination based on shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics. The letter was a reminder to colleges that federal law bars discrimination on the basis of shared ancestry and ethnic characteristics. Amy Fabiano discussed the new guidance with The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Amy said that institutions should read the guidance closely and noted that while the examples the letter gives are \u201cfairly straightforward,\u201d and not as nuanced as the questions her clients have been raising, institutions may be able to \u201cextrapolate from them to what\u2019s going on on your campus.\u201d She added that \u201cAs things have escalated on campus, this guidance is really welcome.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
