Press Release: Jon S. Barooshian Named a Go To Tax Lawyer by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly
Attorney Distinguishes Himself Through Legal Knowledge, Creativity and Strong Record of Success
Worcester, Boston and Framingham, MA – July 26, 2022 – Jon S. Barooshian, Partner, Bowditch & Dewey, has been named a Go To Tax Lawyer by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.
The attorneys who earn this recognition have distinguished themselves through their in-depth knowledge of tax law, creativity, and strong record of success. Because of their accomplishments, other attorneys can make referrals to them with confidence.
“Jon is Bowditch’s go to person with all tax-related disputes. He will spend time researching answers that are buried deeply within complex tax codes. Tax controversy is a unique area where he draws upon his LL.M. in taxation, J.D., business degree and background as a former Massachusetts Assistant District Attorney. For these reasons, he is a valued member of both our Litigation and Estate, Financial and Tax Planning practice groups,” said Attorney Timothy P. Van Dyck, Partner and Practice Area Leader for Commercial Litigation and Employment/Labor at Bowditch.
Mr. Barooshian, who works from Boston and Framingham, is a highly respected trial lawyer who defends businesses and individuals throughout the U.S. Leaders of public and private companies seek his help when they’re facing high-risk, high-exposure, high-profile cases. His primary practice areas include Civil and Criminal Tax Controversy and Compliance, and Government Investigations and White Collar Defense and related civil litigation. Representative victories include:
- Helping the principal of a consulting firm secure complete relief from the IRS, and gaining a separate judgment against its CFO, who had embezzled funds and disguised them on the books as tax payments.
- Resolving a federal money laundering and forfeiture proceeding favorably by educating high-ranking officials on the defendant’s business model in granular detail.
- Reducing a client’s tax liability by nearly $1 million due to a wrongful assessment by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.
- Defended federal criminal case involving allegations of tax evasion, ERISA fraud and workers compensation fraud that resulted in a significant downward departure from the Federal Sentencing Guidelines of 46 to 57 months imprisonment on 17 counts of conspiracy, mail fraud and ERISA false statements to 12 months citing the impact of incarceration upon the defendant’s innocent employees under the First Circuit case U.S. v. Olbres and the defendant’s extraordinary family circumstances.
“It is a privilege to help our clients preserve their livelihoods and their businesses, and to be recognized by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly for doing so. Many of these individuals come to us at their worst moments when everything they’ve built is at risk. I feel honored to empower them to move forward,” said Mr. Barooshian.
