Study Abroad Programs: Your Legal Responsibilities and Obligations – College and University Roundtable

When students travel beyond US borders in a college or university sponsored program, it involves more than an educational experience – it brings additional responsibilities to the institution. From structuring a program, handling emergency situations and accommodating disabilities, to meeting Title IX compliance obligations, this session will discuss a number of issues facing institutions when they expand their campuses and programs worldwide.

Topics will include:

  • Evaluating or Establishing Study Abroad Programs:
    • selection, support and care of students
    • conduct and discipline
    • risk assessment and analysis
    • emergency action plans: medical needs, crime, terrorism
  • Title IX Compliance:
    • providing interim protective measures
    • investigations
    • safeguarding students
    • meeting obligations to prevent, respond, and remediate issues of sexual misconduct occurring in programs abroad
  • Accommodating Students with Disabilities in International Programs:
    • application of the ADA and Section 504 in college-administered and independent programs

Ample time will be provided to respond to your questions.
