Paul Robertson Seeks Investigation into Prosecutor’s Ties to Driver that Killed DOD Official
U.S. Department of Defense official Cathy Johnston was struck and killed while riding her bicycle in Michigan just over a year ago. Authorities found the driver to be impaired on prescription drugs while operating the vehicle. The Sheriff’s Office investigated and suggested a charge of Operating Under the Influence of Drugs causing death. Instead, the prosecutor in the case issued a single misdemeanor charge of “moving violation causing death.” It has since been revealed that the prosecutor and driver are friends.
Neither side denies that the driver hit and killed Johnston, however, questions now concern why the charge was dropped down to a lesser offense. Paul Robertson, co-counsel for the Johnston family, spoke with Military.com:
“The only thing that we’re asking for is the AG to look into this case and just make sure that the process was appropriate, that the action was appropriately investigated, and that there was no finger on the scale with respect to the time that the charging decision was made,” Robertson told Military.com.
