Bowditch has an opening for an attorney in its Higher Education group. The successful candidate may be based in either Boston, Framingham or Worcester. Our Higher Education team advises private and public institutions and organizations on policy development, board governance and student affairs. They also design and conduct employee trainings with respect to federal, state and local regulatory law and compliance. Our clients include Ivy League institutions and private and public universities and colleges.
The successful attorney will have experience in:
- Conducting thorough and impartial investigations involving allegations of civil rights violations and student misconduct, including under Title IX and Title VI.
- Serving as a hearing officer or decision-maker in student and employee conduct proceedings, including matters involving discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct and general student discipline.
- Drafting investigation reports, hearing decisions and related documentation in compliance with legal standards and institutional policies.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of experience conducting investigations under Title IX and Title VI
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Must have a Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school
- Be licensed to practice law in the state of Massachusetts (Member of the Massachusetts Bar) (Multiple state Bar admissions are a plus)
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience serving as outside general counsel to colleges, universities or other educational institutions
- Prior experience providing guidance on policy development, risk management, and internal processes related to civil rights compliance and student affairs
- Prior experience developing and delivering training and compliance initiatives for institutional clients
